What to Know About Homeowner Insurance During Storm Season in Florida

Tropical storms are nothing new to Florida. Every year the official start of storm season is June 1st. And right on time we have what looks like Tropical Storm Alex. One very important thing to understand is that when a storm is declared, insurers in the state stop issuing policies. I received this from our in-house insurance specialist today:

“Please be advised that as of 5:00pm on June 2, 2022, Florida has been placed on binder restrictions due to Tropical Storm Alex.   This means that no insurance may be issued during this period.   We will advise you when bind does resume.”

As a home buyer – especially a first-time home buyer, it’s important to know that your closing could be impacted by the presence of named storms in the Atlantic or Gulf regions.

As a homeowner, you should have your storm plan in place. Know your evacuation routes; make sure that you can handle things on your own for at least 72 hours, and make sure that you know how to contact your insurer in the event you have damage from a storm.

We live in a tropical paradise – most of the time.
